More than half of the parents caring for children at our Malnutrition Treatment Centers have 3 or less years of formal education and 50% of caregivers cannot read or write.
When you give the gift of literacy you give a mother writing supplies, daily instruction in reading and writing, and the pride that comes with being able to write your own
name.
All it takes is a notebook, a pencil, and a willing teacher! For $25 you can give 5 women this gift.

Literacy Kit in ActionSave
Last Black Friday, Anne donated a gift of literacy.
We bought pens, pencils, paper, notebooks, and chalk—everything that caregivers need to learn how to read and write during daily literacy classes at the Malnutrition Treatment Center.
Solevenia was the first mother to use Anne’s gift.
As an 8-year-old child, Slovenia was sent home from school one day, never to return. An illness in her family meant that they could no longer afford her school fees. She never learned to read or write.
Then suddenly, at age 41, she was given an opportunity to change that.
When she arrived at the Malnutrition Treatment Center with her son, and learned that literacy was one of the skills being taught at the center, Slovenia felt both as nervous and excited.
But when the class began on the afternoon of her first day, she jumped “write” in.
Three weeks later, she was writing her name and the names of the children. By week 4, she was able to write her address and phone number.
Slovenia felt proud.
Anne’s donation changed her life for the better.
The confidence Slovenia gained from being able to read or write meant she could be more vocal at her children’s school and read the notices that got sent home in their backpacks. She no longer felt like she was always missing something.
And she knew that one day if her children married, she’d be able to write her name as a witness.
Slovenia will be the first to tell you that Literacy changes lives.
