The Birth Survival Kit in Action
After the birth of her third child, Mirlene suffered a hemorrhage—alone and at home. Pregnant with her fourth child and nearing her delivery date, Mirlene was fearful that this dangerous birth complication would happen again.
And it did.
But this time it was different.
This time Second Mile Midwives were by her side, administering medications and performing interventions that saved her life. She is alive today to mother her four children and sing the praises of the Midwives that made that possible. She recounts how she was given medications to stop the bleeding and IV fluids to keep her blood pressure from bottoming out. How Miss Lourdie, a nurse at the Center, administered iron injections in the days after her birth which took care of the dizziness she was feeling after the birth. She talks about how her little girl is walking now and how she is so happy to be alive to watch her grow.
Everyday, women in Northern Haiti face the harsh reality that 1 in 240 women don’t survive childbirth. Midwives at Second Mile Haiti are chipping away at this statistic one birth at a time. And you can help.
With each Birth Survival Kit you donate, we stock the birth room and the emergency kits with all the essentials for a safe birth so that mother’s like Mirlene can give birth without fear.
